concept:

Named “Hayu Tilixam,” which translates to “Many Nations” in Chinookan, this affordable housing development in Northeast Portland’s Cully Neighborhood comprises 50 units, including nine designated for permanent supportive housing. The 18,300-square-foot site was granted through the Portland Housing Bureau’s 2019 bond initiative and features a central courtyard, ground-floor offices, communal areas, and resident parking. The design prioritizes natural light and incorporates trauma-informed principles, with amenities such as a community room, a children’s playroom, and a private patio. The building consists of eight studio apartments, 23 one-bedroom units, 11 two-bedroom units, and eight three-bedroom units, and has been awarded Platinum certification by Earth Advantage. Cultural identity played a significant role in shaping the programming of the common areas, creating intentional spaces to showcase the work of local Native artists. These spaces include the main lobby, courtyard, stair landings, and the family room.
